Anguish that lies inside

'Camphorated oil and a nightie that could burn, elocution lessons and a smallpox jab, scared of the dentist and the long dark lane, being alone, you're on your own.
The hamster's dead, the guinea pigs dead, tears are shed then… Nana's dead.
Brother off to boarding school, going home alone, on your own.
Friends and neighbours move to Australia we'll never see them again. Linda doesn't like you, You're kind, you're spoilt, you're plain.
It's who you love, not who loves you.
You're so generous, trust too much, You can't sing, can't draw, can't do a thing.
The puppy's dead, you must change schools, on the bus, alone, on your own.
Missing people, people moving, your friend is dead. On your own.
Nobody to hold your hand, on your own.
Nice girls don't and that is that. Your dog has died. You're on your own, alone.
He says he loves you, it's good to know, we're alright here, off you go. Your brother's wife doesn't like you. We'll drink to your equilibrium with her.
On your own, alone.
Off you go we've got your brother, the real hero of the hour.

We miss you now, a bit too much, we hadn't realized, there was a catch.
Roll up your sleeves, you've made your bed, write everyone letters, your auntie's dead.
On your own, alone.
You're coming home!, Please don't come, we can't bear it when you have gone.
Ring us up, don't ring us up, the phone bill really is too long.
Bringing up children, walking to the school, walking back home, on your own, alone.
A heart attack, a wheelchair, but you get to a point where there's no turning back.
Trapped in the headlights, you've made your bed, roll up your sleeves, hold up your head. Your cousin's dead.
Give me love in my heart keep it burning.
Crying on your own, alone.
There's blood, there's fear, on your own, alone.
Give me love in my heart keep it burning.
Roots to grow and wings to fly. A reason to return, but you don't know why.
Trying to be a lover, a daughter, a mother, a sister, a friend, all together.
Shine your light for everyone to see.
On your own, alone.
Your father's dead,
The balls you've been juggling come crashing down,
over your head, all on the ground.
You're alone.
A darkness descends, it was there all the time, it was just higher up so the sun could still shine.
It's who loves you not who you love.
Roll up your sleeves, get out of bed, you're lucky you know, don't ever forget.
Count your blessings, don't give up, put love in your heart and a smile on your face.
There are people worse off all over the place.
Happiness is not knowing you are alone.

Your mother's dead.
You're on your own, all alone.
Your heart is broken, your head is a whirl, pain washes over you like a waterfall.
A numbness enfolds you to push away,  darkness and agony that is threatening to stay.'
What becomes of the broken-hearted?
It's what's in people's hearts that matters.
